My name is Seb and let me start by saying im no bodybuilder, im just a normal 29yr old guy but for most of my life I was underweight and have always had a problem putting on muscle in the right places.
I was extermeley skinny growing up and was likened to those stick man cartoon sketches with the big head and the stick body, that became my nickname ‘bighead’.
I went to a pretty tough school, and after getting my big head kicked in a few times I decided to take action so i tried numerous martial arts: judo, ninjitsu, karate and muay thai over some years.
I started these tough martial arts from about twelve and received many injuries that my body wasnt ready for and may not have had the correct amount of time to heal from. The rigarous training I was going through evetually led to me rupturing both biceps making them flat and soft, a bit like upside down bingo wings. I also always had a strange shaped chest i guess its just ginetic, my freinds used to say I had the chest of the sunken treasure, so my t-shirt was practically glued on. So, sick of awkward injuries i decided to switch to boxing where I did well as an amateur and went all over britain and won many fights. I made many good freinds and had some of the best times of my life.
Boxing training was on tuesday and thursday and we all used to meet at the gym on sunday, our trainer would pick us up in the mini bus and we used to go to Richmond common and jog around it. I was so fit back then i used to feel like a superhero (without the spandex).
Although i was very fit and strong and could fight very well (no body called me big head anymore) I still had not acheived the physical stucture that I always wanted which I would describe as atheletic but big in the right places such as chest, arms and the trapezius (muscles between the neck and shoulder). These are the places that people notice, make you fit and look better in your clothes and generally make you more attractive to the opposite sex, but they can be some of the hardest places to grow, define and maintain.
I know this because I have spent years working out the right exercises and specific routines to get around my genetics and my old injuries to attain a firm chest, solid biceps and reach my overall physical goals.
Although im not quite there yet, im happy and i can say i look better now than i ever did even when i was an avid boxer. All I do now is exercise three to four times a week – max, but I do the right exercises in the right sequence and frequency and I dont lift weights for more than an hour (unless I want to). I do keep fit to look good but the real reason is the way it makes me feel, just on a daily basis.
When I dont get to work out, lets say I go on holiday for two weeks (lets hope thailand) and they dont have any gym equipment, I get back and get a serious case of holiday blues and dont get back in the gym for another week or so thats when I feel the old negative habbits and feelings coming back I start feeling lethargic, sleeping in later and being generally slower and quick tempered. So its better to just keep it up – no matter what.
Working out is draining at first, but I find it gives me more energy in the long run, I need less sleep, enjoy my food more, and if I get a bit crazy in the pub on a friday night I find I can shake that hangover alot quiker or sometimes not even feel it, when my pals will be layed up in bed all day begging for painkillers, but maybe they just drink more than me (joke – im no light weight).
We all have off days and sometimes I realy dont want to go to the gym, but if I just drag myself down there I find I can shake a bad or depressing feeling and have a more productive day.
I dont go to some fancy expensive gym just to say I do, my gym is relatively small and not filled with muscle bound guys who grunt to loudly and throw weights around or pretty ladies who dont really go to work out. Both act as distractions and take away from why your actually there, to get fit and strong.
As long as the gym has the right machines and equipment to work out the muscle groups that you need to improve, that should be all your worried about, but I suppose a bit of banter never hurt anyone.
So for me its not about showing off every chance I get taking my top off and plying on the baby oil, its about being fit, strong, healthy, and feeling good then then the looks fall into place.
